Mentor Information

My favorite thing about my AB Cochlear implant is
One of my daughter's favourite things is that she can listen to music and watch videos linking her tablet to the ComPilot. And when using the phone, she finds that using DuoPhone really helps her to hear well.
With my AB cochlear implant, I can
My daughter can really hear - and enjoy - music. Her music perception is so good, she can play saxaphone!
My favorite sound is
My daughter loves that she can hear from a distance, if it's the dog barking of her sister in another room.
I chose AB because
At the time of my daughter's first implantation, I learnt that AB had developed an ability to deliver a wide range of sound and, since we love music in our house, this wide range of sound means our daughter access to - and enjoys - music. Also, AB had developed a sound processing strategy which mean that my daughter would be able to better hear speech in noise - priceless!
I am a BEA Mentor because
Being profoundly deaf myself I found it very hard when my own daughter was born deaf and I had very little support at the time when I had to make the decision to implant her (as I am a hearing aid user). It was a very unsettling emotional journey and, being a BEA mentor, I am amazed how much support and knowledge is now available, and wish I had this support when I was considering an implant for my child. Through my own life experiences as a deaf child/adult I am able to give something back, to share my empathy, experience and this amazing technology with others.
I can help cochlear implant candidates by
By being open and honest, I can provide guidance on what life with a CI is like.
